- 1 lb. raisins
- 1 c. cold water
- 1/2 c. shortening
- 2 c. sugar
- 4 c. flour
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
- 1 tsp. nutmeg
- 1 tsp. cloves
- 1 Tbsp. soda, level
Directions

1Boil raisins 20 minutes in 2 cups water, stir in shortening, and add one cup of cold water.

2Sift all dry ingredients together except the soda and add to the raisin mixture.

3Dissolve 1 level tablespoon soda in 1 tablespoon boiling water and add to the batter.

4Pour into tube pan and bake 350° for 1 hour.

5Do not over bake.

6The cake should be at least a day old before serving to obtain full flavor.
