  • 2 cups raisins
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup Crisco shortening
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 34 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 12 teaspoon allspice
  • 1 cup chopped nuts (optional)

    Preheat oven to 375F.

    Cover raisins with water.

    Bring to a boil and boil for 5 minutes.

    Do not drain.

    Cool.

    Cream shortening and sugar.

    Add eggs and beat well; stir in vanilla.

    Add boiled raisins AND THEIR WATER, plus 1/4 cup additional water.

    Combine dry ingredients.

    Add to creamed mixture, a little at a time, stirring after each addition.

    Stir in the nuts.
