  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1 1/2 c. granulated sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 oz. red food coloring
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • 1 tsp. cocoa (sweet)
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 1/2 c. cake flour
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1 tsp. vinegar

    Cream shortening, sugar and eggs.

    Make a paste of coloring and cocoa; add to shortening mixture.

    Add milk alternately with flour and salt.

    Add vanilla.

    Fold in vinegar and soda (made in a paste).

    Bake at 350° for 30 minutes in 2 nine-inch layer pans.
