- 1 round steak (1/2 inch thick)
- salt and pepper
- flour
- fat
- 1 c. sliced onions
- 2 (8 oz.) cans tomato sauce
- 1 Tbsp. sugar
- 2 Tbsp. soy sauce
- 1 bay leaf
- 1/2 tsp. herbs (thyme, basil, marjoram or oregano)
Directions

1Sprinkle steak with salt, pepper and flour; pound on both sides with meat pounder or edge of heavy saucer.

2In a large, heavy skillet or Dutch oven, brown steak well in a few tablespoons of hot fat.

3Top with sliced onions.

4Combine tomato sauce with rest of ingredients and pour over meat.

5Cover and cook over low heat until tender, about 1 1/2 hours.

6Watch carefully to prevent sticking.

7Add water as tomato sauce cooks away.

8Serves 4.
