- 1 1/2 lb. dried split green peas (about 3 1/2 c.)
- 6 leeks, sliced
- 4 carrots, sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
- 1 tsp. savory
- 2 tsp. salt
- 1 tsp. pepper

1["Heat peas and water to boiling in a large kettle. Boil 2 minutes. Remove from heat. Cover and let stand 1 hour. Add remaining ingredients to peas. Heat to boiling. Reduce heat. Cover and simmer about 2 hours or until soup is thick enough to stand a spoon in. Serve with pumpernickel bread.
