Ingredients

  • 3 cups flour
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons sugar heaping, if you like it sweet
  • 1/2 cup vegetable shortening or lard
  • 2 cups buttermilk or canned milk

Directions

    Heat a skillet or pan over medium-high heat.

    Add oil (vegetable, canola, etc), butter, shortening. I used very little oil-maybe 1 tsp. Lower the heat to medium.

    Combine all dry ingredients and shortening and mix well.

    Then slowly add in the milk until a manageable dough is formed.

    Shape balls of dough depending on how large you want the bread.

    Then flatten the balls into pancakes about 1/2 inch thick.

    Place in the pan and allow each side to brown, cooking each side for about 8 minutes or until fully cooked.
