- 1/4 c. butter or margarine
- 1/4 c. light brown sugar
- 2 1/2 c. sliced apples
- 2 tsp. lemon juice
- 1/3 c. shortening
- 1/4 tsp. salt
- 2/3 c. sugar
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1 egg, well beaten
- 1 1/2 c. sifted flour
- 2 tsp. baking powder
- 2/3 c. milk
Directions

1Melt butter in an 8 x 8-inch pan; sprinkle with brown sugar. Arrange apples, overlapping wedges on sugar.

2Sprinkle with lemon juice.

3Cream shortening, sugar and vanilla together.

4Add egg and beat vigorously.

5Add sifted dry ingredients alternately with milk.

6Pour batter over fruit.

7Bake at 325° about 1 hour; cool 5 minutes, then turn upside down on a serving plate.
