- 1 c. shortening
- 1 c. buttermilk
- 2 eggs
- 1 Tbsp. vinegar
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 1/2 c. sugar
- 1 oz. red food coloring
- 2 1/2 c. cake flour
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 2 Tbsp. cocoa
- 1 oz. water
Directions

1Cream shortening and sugar until light.

2Add eggs, one at a time, beating after each.

3Make a paste of cocoa, coloring and water; add to the creamed mixture.

4Add salt and flour alternately with the buttermilk, beginning and ending with flour.

5Add vanilla last, then mix soda with vinegar and add to the mixture.

6Do not beat at this stage; just fold gently until blended.

7Bake at 350° for 30 minutes.
