Basic Marinara Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 (28-30 ounce.) cans crushed tomatoes
  • 2 (6 ounce.) cans tomato paste
  • 4 tbsp. sugar (more if sweet marinara is desired)
  • 1 tbsp. oregano
  • 1 tbsp. basil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic pwdr
  • 1 teaspoon onion pwdr
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic in oil, minced Or possibly 1 clove garlic, minced + 1/2 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil

Directions

    In 3 qt saucepan, place garlic and oil over low heat.

    When oil is slightly bubbling and garlic is gold in color (not brown), stir in crushed tomatoes and tomato paste.

    Blend till paste is absorbed into sauce, then add in seasoning and sugar; stir and cover.

    When sauce begins to bubble, stir; recheck flame to be sure it is low.

    Cover and let simmer 45 min to 1 hour, stirring occasionally.

    Serves 8.

    Optional: Add in sauteed onions, peppers or possibly mushrooms.
