  • 1 pkg. dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 c. warm water (105~ to 115~), divided
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/4 c. butter or margarine, melted
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 4 1/2 to 5 c. all-purpose flour
  • 3 Tbsp. butter or margarine, softened and divided

Directions

    Dissolve yeast in 1/2 cup warm water in a large bowl; let stand 5 minutes.

    Add remaining 1 cup water and next 4 ingredients, stirring well.

    Add enough flour to make a soft dough.

    Turn dough out onto a floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic (about 4 minutes).

    Place in a well-greased bowl, turning to grease top.

    Cover; let rise in a warm place (85°) free from drafts, for 1 hour or until doubled in bulk.
