- 2 c. flour
- 2 tsp. baking powder
- 1/4 tsp. baking soda
- 1/2 tsp. salt (optional)
- 1/3 c. vegetable shortening
- 3/4 c. buttermilk
Directions

1Heat oven to 450°.

2In large bowl combine flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt (if desired); using fork, mix well. Using pastry blender, cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

3Add buttermilk; using fork, mix just until mixture forms soft dough.

4Turn dough out onto lightly floured surface. Knead 6 to 8 times to mix thoroughly.

5Roll out dough to 1/2 inch thickness.

6With floured cutter, cut out biscuits.

7Place on ungreased baking sheet.

8Bake until golden, about 12 to 15 minutes.
