- 1 cup butter
- 1 cup confectioners' sugar
- 1 egg
- 12 teaspoon vanilla
- 12 teaspoon peppermint extract
- 1 dash salt
- 2 12 cups flour
- 12 teaspoon red food coloring
Directions

1In a mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar together until fluffy.

2Add egg, vanilla, extract and salt, beat well.

3Add flour and beat until thoroughly mixed.

4Divide dough in half.

5Add red food coloring to one half.

6Wrap in plastic wrap and chill for 30 minutes.

7For each cookie, on a floured surface shape a teaspoon of plain dough and a teaspoon of red dough into a 4 inch long rope.

8Place ropes side by side and twist together.

9Pinch ends to seal.

10Form into a candy cane shape and place 2 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets.

11Preheat oven to 350F.

12Bake for 8- 10 minutes.

13Remove from sheet, cool and brush on icing.
