Caramel Layer Choc-Squares

  • 1 pkg. (14 oz.) light caramels
  • 1/3 c. evaporated milk
  • 1 pkg. German chocolate cake mix
  • 3/4 c. butter or margarine, melted
  • 1/3 c. evaporated milk
  • 1 c. chopped nuts

Directions

    In double boiler, combine caramels and 1/3 cup evaporated milk; cook over hot water, stirring constantly until caramels are melted.

    Set aside.

    In large mixing bowl, combine dry cake mix, butter, 1/3 cup evaporated milk and nuts.

    Mix by hand until dough holds together.

    Press 1/2 of dough into greased and floured 9 x 13 x 2-inch baking pan.

    Bake at 350° for 6 minutes, then spread melted caramels over crust, then crumble the rest of the dough over top and bake for 15 to 18 minutes.

    Cool; may require refrigeration about 30 minutes, then cut into squares.

    May eat it warm; squares may crumble.
