Chocolate Layer Cake

  • 2 c. sifted cake flour
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla
  • 2/3 c. milk
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 2 c. butter or margarine
  • 3 egg whites, stiffly beaten

    Sift flour once, measure, add baking powder and salt, and sift together three times.

    Cream butter thoroughly, add sugar gradually and cream together until light and fluffy.

    Add flour, alternately with milk, a small amount at a time.

    Beat after each addition until smooth.

    Add vanilla and fold in stiffly beaten egg whites. Bake in 2 greased 9-inch layer pans in moderate oven for 25 to 30 minutes.

    Put layers together and cover top and sides with soft chocolate frosting.

    Sprinkle sides with nuts.
