  • 1 qt. water
  • 2 lb. ground chuck
  • 2 medium onions, chopped
  • 2 (8 oz.) cans tomato sauce
  • 1/4 tsp. ground allspice
  • 1/4 tsp. garlic powder
  • 4 Tbsp. chili powder
  • 1 tsp. cumin seed or ground cumin
  • 1/2 tsp. cayenne (red pepper)
  • 1/4 tsp. ground cloves
  • 2 Tbsp. brown vinegar
  • 1 large bay leaf
  • 1 1/2 tsp. cocoa or 1/2 sq. chocolate
  • 2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 4 drops Tabasco sauce

Directions

    Put water, ground chuck and chopped onions in saucepan; do not brown meat.

    Simmer for 30 minutes.

    Add remaining ingredients. Simmer, uncovered, for 3 hours.

    Remove bay leaf.

    For last hour, pot may be covered after desired consistency is reached.
