Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk

    Sift dry ingredients. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse meal. Add buttermilk to flour mixture, stirring until dry ingredients are moistened. Turn out onto a lightly floured surface; knead lightly 3 to 5 times or until smooth.

    Pat dough out to 1/2-inch thickness; cut with a 2 1/4-inch biscuit cutter. Place biscuits on a lightly greased baking sheet. Bake at 450° for 10 minutes.
