  • 2 cups self-rising flour
  • 1 tsp ground allspice
  • 3 tbsp butter, chopped
  • 1/2 cup chopped pitted dates
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 1 None egg, beaten
  • None None Butter, to serve

    Preheat the oven to 425°F. Lightly grease a baking pan.

    Sift flour and allspice into a large bowl. Add butter and rub in, using fingertips. Stir in dates and sugar. Mix milk and egg in a small bowl; reserve 1 tsp for glazing. Add remaining to dry ingredients and mix well.

    Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Press or roll out lightly until about 1-inch thick. Using a floured 1 1/2-inch round cookie cutter, cut into rounds. Place close together on prepared pan. Brush with reserved milk mixture.

    Bake for 12-15 mins, until scones sound hollow when tapped. Cool on a wire rack. Serve warm with butter.
