  • 1 c. shortening
  • 2 c. sugar
  • 4 eggs, separated
  • 2 sq. chocolate
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 2 1/2 c. flour
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1 c. buttermilk or sour milk
  • 2 Tbsp. hot water
  • 1 tsp. vanilla

Directions

    Cream together the shortening and sugar.

    Add 4 egg yolks; blend until smooth.

    Melt the chocolate; add to creamed mixture. Sift flour and salt; add alternately with the buttermilk.

    Mix the hot water with the soda; pour into the batter and mix.

    Add vanilla.

    Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites.

    Bake at 350° for 40 to 45 minutes.

    Use two 9-inch pans.
