- 1/4 c. shortening
- 1 yeast cake
- 1 c. milk
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1/2 c. sugar
- 1 egg
- 3 1/2 c. flour
- shortening (for deep frying)
Directions

1Heat milk slightly and dissolve yeast.

2Add 1 1/2 cups flour and beat until smooth.

3Let rise in a warm place until double in bulk, about 2 hours.

4Cream shortening, salt and sugar.

5Add eggs and beat.

6Blend this mixture into yeast sponge.

7Add remaining flour and knead well, about 5 minutes.

8Rub with shortening and let rise again until double in bulk.

9Roll about 1/2-inch thick and cut with doughnut cutter.

10Let rise about 45 minutes.

11Fry in deep shortening.

12Dip in caramel syrup.

13Let cool.
