  • 23 cup sugar
  • 4 egg yolks
  • 12 teaspoon salt
  • 8 cups milk
  • 4 egg whites
  • 6 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • nutmeg

Directions

    In a large saucepan, beat together 2/3 cup sugar and egg yolks.

    Add salt and stir in milk.

    Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture coats a spoon.

    Remove from heat and let cool.

    In a large bowl, beat egg whites until foamy.

    Gradually add the remaining sugar, beating until soft peaks form.

    Add to cooled mixture in saucepan and mix well.

    Add vanilla.

    Cover and chill 3 to 4 hours.
