Ingredients

  • 2 c. sugar
  • 1 c. Crisco
  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • 4 eggs, separated
  • 2 1/2 c. flour
  • 1 pkg. German chocolate (sweet)
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. soda

Directions

    Dissolve chocolate in 1/2 cup of boiling water.

    Set aside to cool.

    Beat egg whites until stiff.

    Cream the egg yolk, sugar and Crisco.

    Add alternately 3/4 cup of buttermilk and flour. Dissolve soda in 1/4 cup of buttermilk.

    Add to batter plus salt, vanilla and chocolate.

    Fold in egg whites.

    Bake in 350° oven. Makes 3 nice size layers.
