- 1/2 c. butter or shortening
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1 1/2 tsp. soda
- 1 tsp. ginger
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1 c. hot water
- 1/2 c. granulated sugar
- 2 1/2 c. plain flour, sifted
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp. cloves
- 1 c. molasses
Directions

1Cream shortening and sugar; add beaten egg.

2Measure and sift dry ingredients.

3Combine molasses and hot water.

4Add dry ingredients alternately with liquid, a small amount at a time, and beat after each addition until smooth.

5Bake in well greased and floured 9 x 9 x 2-inch pan at 350° for 45 minutes.
