Layered Mixed Vegetable Salad

Ingredients
- 1 head lettuce
- 1/2 c. chopped green or red onion
- 1/2 c. (1 stalk) celery
- 1/2 c. (1 small) green pepper
- 10 oz. pkg. (1 1/2 c.) frozen peas
- 1 c. mayonnaise or salad dressing
- 2 Tbsp. sugar
- 2 c. (8 oz.) shredded Cheddar cheese
- 10 slices bacon or 1/2 c. bacon bits
- 8 oz. can water chestnuts (optional)
Directions

1Tear lettuce into bite-size pieces.

2In a large bowl or 13 x 9-inch pan, layer lettuce and onion.

3Spoon 1/2 cup mayonnaise evenly over top.

4Layer chopped celery next.

5Then layer diced green pepper.

6Thaw and drain peas.

7Layer peas.
-
8Spread remaining mayonnaise over top.

9Sprinkle sugar and cheese.

10Fry the bacon slices and then drain and crumble.

11Add bacon over top.

12Cover and refrigerate at least 8 hours.

13If desired, add drained water chestnuts.

14Toss before serving.
