  • 3/4 c. shortening
  • 2 c. sugar
  • 1 1/2 c. milk or water
  • 4 egg whites
  • 3 1/4 c. flour
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 3 tsp. baking powder
  • 3 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 oz. unsweetened chocolate
  • 1/4 tsp. soda

Directions

    Cream shortening, sugar and 2 tablespoons milk or water until light and fluffy.

    Beat unbeaten egg whites one at a time into mixture.

    Sift flour and measure.

    Sift again with salt and baking powder.

    Add sifted dry ingredients alternately with remaining liquid to cream mixture.

    Add vanilla.

    Melt chocolate and combine with soda.

    Divide batter into 2 equal parts.

    Add chocolate mixture to one part.

    Drop batter by spoonfuls into a greased and floured cake pan, alternating the white and chocolate batter until all is used.
