Ingredients

  • 4 lbs. stew beef
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • 1/2 c. flour
  • 2/3 c. carrots, cubed
  • 1 c. turnips, cubed & uncooked
  • 1 sm. onion, cut in thin slices
  • 1/4 c. water

Directions

    Cut meat into 1 1/2 inch cubes.

    Sprinkle with salt and pepper and dredge in flour.

    Grease a frying pan.

    Add in meat, stir constantly to sear all surfaces quickly.

    When well browned, put in a saucepan.

    Rinse frying pan with boiling water and pour over meat.

    Cover meat with boiling water and boil 5 min.

    Reduce heat and simmer till meat is tender (3 hrs for lesser cuts).

    Add in carrots, turnips, onion, salt and pepper for last hour of cooking.

    One half hour before stew is done, skim off fat and add in potatoes.

    When potatoes are done, thicken with 1/4 c. flour mixed with 1/4 c. cool water.

    Cook an additional 5 min.
