  • 2 c. water
  • 1 pkg. onion soup mix (1 3/8 oz.)
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 Tbsp. sugar
  • 2 Tbsp. shortening
  • 2 Tbsp. grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 c. warm water
  • 1 pkg. active dry yeast
  • 5 1/2 to 6 c. sifted all-purpose flour

    Bring 2 cups water to boiling in saucepan; add soup mix and simmer, covered, for 10 minutes.

    Stir in sugar, salt, cheese and shortening.

    Cool to lukewarm.

    Sprinkle yeast on warm water in large bowl; stir to dissolve.

    Stir in onion soup mixture and 2 1/2 cups flour.

    Beat with electric mixer at medium speed, scraping the bowl occasionally, 2 minutes or by hand until batter sheets from spoon.

    Mix in remaining flour, a little at a time, first with spoon and then with hands, until dough leaves the sides of bowl.

    Dough will be moderately stiff.
