  • 1 3/4 c. all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 c. self-rising corn meal
  • 1 Tbsp. onion powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 3/4 tsp. sugar
  • 2 c. milk
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • vegetable oil

    Peel onions.

    Cut into 1/2-inch slices and separate into rings.

    Combine flour and next 6 ingredients.

    Beat with a wire whisk until mixture is smooth.

    Pour oil to a depth of 2 to 3 inches into a Dutch oven or heavy saucepan; heat to 375°. Dip onion rings in batter.
