  • Dal - total split-peas/lentils should be 1 1/4 cups
  • 1/4 cup channa dal
  • 1/4 cup urad dal
  • 1/4 cup masur dal
  • 1/4 cup toovar dal
  • 1/4 cup mung dal
  • 5 cups water
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne
  • Spice blend
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil or ghee
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon garlic, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seed
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala (hot spice powder)
  • 2 large tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon salt
