  • 2 1/3 c. all-purpose flour
  • 2 Tbsp. fine dry bread crumbs
  • 3/4 tsp. salt
  • 1 c. sugar (reserve 1/4 c.)
  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 40 fresh plums (prune, Damson or Greengage), pitted and cut in half or use 2 (30 oz.) cans whole purple plums, drained and pitted
  • 3/4 c. milk
  • 3 Tbsp. butter, cut in pieces
  • 1/4 tsp. cloves

    Combine flour, baking powder, salt and 3/4 cup sugar in a large mixing bowl.

    Add shortening, milk and eggs.

    Beat at medium speed for

    Grease bottom and sides of an 13 x 9 x 2-inch pan.

    Coat with bread crumbs.

    Turn batter into prepared pan.

    Place plums on top, pushing one edge of each half down 1/4-inch into batter.

    Dot with butter.

    Combine remaining 1/4 cup sugar and cloves; mix well.
