  • 3 c. sugar
  • water (enough to make 1 c. when mixed with milk)
  • 1 1/2 c. butter
  • 1 Tbsp. vanilla
  • 1 Tbsp. lemon juice
  • 1 small can evaporated milk
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 5 large eggs
  • 3 c. flour

    Cream the shortening, sugar and salt.

    Add eggs, one at a time.

    Add flour and milk alternately, ending with flour.

    Fold in flavoring by hand.

    Bake in a greased tube pan for 1 hour and 45 minutes at 325°.

    Start cake in a cold oven.

    Don't open the door while cooking.
