Raisin Scones

Ingredients

  • 1 c. unbleached flour
  • 3 Tbsp. brown sugar
  • 1 tsp. allspice
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 c. raisins, chopped
  • 1 c. whole wheat flour
  • 2 Tbsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 c. cold butter or margarine
  • 3/4 c. buttermilk

Directions

    In a mixing bowl, combine flours, sugar, baking powder, allspice, soda and salt. Cut butter into small pieces and work into flour with a pastry blender.

    Beat eggs with buttermilk and stir into mixture along with raisins.

    Turn dough out onto a floured board and knead for 2 minutes.

    Shape into 2 thick circles, 5 inches each in diameter.

    Cut each into quarters and place together in circles on a lightly greased baking sheet.

    Bake in a preheated 400° oven for 20 to 25 minutes or until nicely browned. Makes 8 scones.
