- 1/2 medium size head red cabbage, shredded
- 3 Tbsp. butter or margarine
- 1 medium size onion, peeled and cut
- boiling water
- 1 apple, peeled and cut into pieces
- sprinkle of black pepper
- salt (optional)
- 4 cloves
- 1 bay leaf
- 3 Tbsp. sugar
- 2 Tbsp. white vinegar or lemon juice
Directions

1Melt butter in saucepan.

2Add onion and cabbage; stir.

3Fry 1 to 2 minutes.

4Add boiling water as needed (not much).

5Add apple pieces; stir.

6Add pepper, bay leaf and cloves and stir.

7Add boiling water, about 1 cup.

8Stir, cover and simmer about 1/2 hour.

9Check for water often.

10Stir repeatedly.

11Add sugar and vinegar; stir.

12Taste for sour-sweetness.

13(Leftover red cabbage reheated tastes extra good!)
