  • 4 (1/2 oz.) bottles red food coloring
  • 3 Tbsp. Nestle milk cocoa
  • 1/2 c. Crisco
  • 1 1/2 c. sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • 2 1/4 c. sifted flour
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 Tbsp. vinegar
  • 1 tsp. soda

    Make coloring paste by mixing red food coloring with cocoa. Set aside.

    Cream Crisco with sugar.

    Add eggs and coloring paste and beat 10 minutes.

    Mix in buttermilk slowly.

    Add flour and salt.

    Add vanilla and mix well.

    Stir (with a spoon) in separately vinegar and soda.

    Mix well and bake in 3 well-greased and floured 8-inch pans 30 to 35 minutes at 350°.
