Ingredients
- 1/2 c. shortening
- 1 1/2 c. sugar
- 2 eggs
- 2 oz. red food coloring (or 1 oz. coloring and 1 oz. water can be used)
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 2 Tbsp. cocoa
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 c. buttermilk
- 2 1/2 c. cake flour
- 1 Tbsp. vinegar
- 1 tsp. soda
Directions

1Cream shortening and sugar until fluffy.

2Add eggs and beat. Make a paste of coloring and cocoa and add to mixture.

3Add salt, milk, flour and vanilla alternately.

4Put vinegar and salt together and add to mixture last.

5Bake in two 9-inch pans at 350° for 25 to 30 minutes.

6Let cool, then split layers using thread in a sawing motion.

7While cake is baking, start making the frosting.
