Red Waldorf Cake

Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1 1/2 c. sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 oz. red food coloring (or 1 oz. coloring and 1 oz. water can be used)
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 Tbsp. cocoa
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • 2 1/2 c. cake flour
  • 1 Tbsp. vinegar
  • 1 tsp. soda

Directions

    Cream shortening and sugar until fluffy.

    Add eggs and beat. Make a paste of coloring and cocoa and add to mixture.

    Add salt, milk, flour and vanilla alternately.

    Put vinegar and salt together and add to mixture last.

    Bake in two 9-inch pans at 350° for 25 to 30 minutes.

    Let cool, then split layers using thread in a sawing motion.

    While cake is baking, start making the frosting.
