  • 1 lb. dried apples
  • 1 lb. dried apricots
  • 1 lb. pitted prunes
  • 1 lb. raisins
  • 2 qt. water
  • salt to taste
  • 4 to 6 c. flour
  • 5 pkg. yeast
  • 2 lb. brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 c. molasses
  • 1 c. shortening
  • 3 c. nuts, chopped
  • 3 Tbsp. cinnamon
  • 2 tsp. cloves, nutmeg and allspice (each)

    Put fruit in 2 quarts of water and bring to simmer to soften fruit.

    Pour liquid into a large bowl.

    Add sugar, molasses and spices to the warm liquid.

    Add flour until a soft dough is formed.

    Let cool to lukewarm so you don't kill yeast.

    Add yeast and fruit.

    Let rise in a warm place until it doubles.

    Knead lightly and separate to pans.

    Hand shaped loaves will also work. Let dough rise and double again.

    Then bake at 350° for 50 to 60 minutes.

    Makes 5 to 10 loaves depending on size of pan.
