Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1 egg, beaten well
  • 2 1/2 c. flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp. soda
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. cloves
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 c. Brer Rabbit molasses
  • 1 c. hot water

Directions

    Cream the shortening, sugar and egg.

    Stir flour, soda, cinnamon, cloves and salt together.

    Add to the creamed mixture. Combine the molasses and water; add to the rest of the ingredients.

    Bake in 8 x 8 x 2-inch greased and floured pan. Bake at 350° for 20 to 30 minutes.

    This is good served with raisin sauce or lemon sauce.
