  • 2 1/3 c. flour
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 1/2 tsp. soda
  • 1/4 tsp. allspice or cloves
  • 1/4 tsp. ground or fresh grated nutmeg
  • 1 tsp. ginger
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 c. molasses
  • 1/3 c. butter
  • 1 c. sour milk or 3/4 c. water
  • 1 egg (optional)
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 3/4 c. chopped dates or nuts (optional)

Directions

    Sift flour; resift with salt, soda and spices.

    Heat to boiling molasses and butter; add sour milk or water.

    Beat and add egg.

    Stir in sifted ingredients.

    Beat batter until well blended, then add vanilla and chopped dates or nuts.

    Bake in greased 9 x 13-inch pan at 350° for about 35 minutes.
