- 2 1/3 c. flour
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1 1/2 tsp. soda
- 1/4 tsp. allspice or cloves
- 1/4 tsp. ground or fresh grated nutmeg
- 1 tsp. ginger
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
- 1 c. molasses
- 1/3 c. butter
- 1 c. sour milk or 3/4 c. water
- 1 egg (optional)
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 3/4 c. chopped dates or nuts (optional)
Directions

1Sift flour; resift with salt, soda and spices.

2Heat to boiling molasses and butter; add sour milk or water.

3Beat and add egg.

4Stir in sifted ingredients.

5Beat batter until well blended, then add vanilla and chopped dates or nuts.

6Bake in greased 9 x 13-inch pan at 350° for about 35 minutes.
