- 1/2 c. butter or margarine
- 1/2 c. sugar
- 1 egg, beaten
- 2 tsp. cardamom
- 4 1/2 to 5 c. flour
- 1 3/4 c. milk
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 pkg. yeast
- 1 c. raisins (optional)
Directions

1Melt butter in small pan.

2Add milk, sugar and salt, then egg. Keep at right temperature for the yeast, a little hot to the touch.

3Add powdered yeast; stir well and let sit for 4 minutes. Beat in flour to a very stiff dough.

4Beat and beat some more. Add raisins.

5Let rise until double in volume.

6Knead and shape into 30 medium balls (or smaller, if you prefer) and let rise again.

7Brush with egg mixed with 1 tablespoon milk and bake at 400° for 10 to 15 minutes.

8Serve fresh, as is, or with jam or cut in half, buttered with jam or cheese.
