Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. butter or margarine
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 2 tsp. cardamom
  • 4 1/2 to 5 c. flour
  • 1 3/4 c. milk
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 pkg. yeast
  • 1 c. raisins (optional)

    Melt butter in small pan.

    Add milk, sugar and salt, then egg. Keep at right temperature for the yeast, a little hot to the touch.

    Add powdered yeast; stir well and let sit for 4 minutes. Beat in flour to a very stiff dough.

    Beat and beat some more. Add raisins.

    Let rise until double in volume.

    Knead and shape into 30 medium balls (or smaller, if you prefer) and let rise again.

    Brush with egg mixed with 1 tablespoon milk and bake at 400° for 10 to 15 minutes.

    Serve fresh, as is, or with jam or cut in half, buttered with jam or cheese.
