Ingredients

  • 1 (14 ounce) package caramels
  • 23 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 (18 ounce) box German chocolate cake mix (all chocolate mixes are fine)
  • 34 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup nuts, chopped (use your favorite)
  • 1 (12 ounce) package semi-sweet chocolate chips

Directions

    Unwrap caramels, and combine with 1/3 cup of the evaporated milk in a saucepan.

    Stir over medium heat until melted.

    Be very careful and don't leave unattended or it will burn.

    Combine cake mix, the other 1/3 cup milk, and softened butter in a bowl until just combined (just holds together).

    If desired, add chopped nuts to the cake mixture (nuts taste better if toasted on a cookie sheet for a little in the oven first, but would need to be cooled before adding).

    Press 1/2 of the cake mixture into a greased 9 x 13 pan and bake at 350F for 6 minutes.

    Remove the pan and sprinkle with the chocolate chips and if desired, the marshmallows.

    Pour melted caramel mixture over everything.

    Crumble the rest of the cake mixture over the top.

    Bake for another 15 to 18 minutes.

    Cool slightly and cut into small squares.
