- 2 c. flour
- 2 1/4 tsp. baking powder
- 1/4 tsp. baking soda
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1/3 c. shortening
- 3/4 c. buttermilk
- 2 tsp. melted shortening
Directions

1Preheat oven to 450°.

2Sift flour and then measure.

3Combine with remaining dry ingredients and resift 3 times.

4Cut in shortening with a pastry blender or rub with fingertips.

5Stir in buttermilk until thoroughly mixed.

6Turn dough into a lightly floured surface and knead about a dozen times.

7Roll out to 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick, then cut with a floured biscuit cutter.

8Place biscuits on a greased baking sheet.

9Brush tops with melted shortening.

10Bake for 12 to 15 minutes.

11Yields 14 to 16.
