- 1 cake yeast
- 1/4 c. lukewarm water
- 2 c. buttermilk
- 4 Tbsp. sugar
- 2 tsp. salt
- 1/4 tsp. soda
- 4 Tbsp. melted shortening
- 5 c. flour
Directions

1Soften yeast in lukewarm water.

2Scald buttermilk in top of double boiler.

3Add sugar, salt, soda and melted shortening.

4Cool to lukewarm.

5Add softened yeast and 1/2 the flour, beating well. Add enough flour to make a soft dough.

6Turn out on lightly floured board and knead until satiny.

7Shape into small round biscuits and place in a greased pan or roll out 1/2-inch thick; cut with biscuit cutter.

8Brush each with melted butter.

9Cover and let rise until double in bulk, about 1 1/2 hours.

10Bake at 400° for 15 to 20 minutes.
