  • 2 c. flour
  • 1 c. white sugar
  • 1 c. brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • 1 egg, beaten

Directions

    Sift flour; measure and sift into bowl with sugars and salt. Cut in shortening with pastry blender until it is crumbly. Measure out 1 cup of this mixture and set aside for topping. Dissolve soda in buttermilk and add to beaten egg.

    Stir in remaining crumb mixture.

    Pour into a wax paper-lined 8-inch square pan.

    Sprinkle the 1 cup of crumb mixture over batter. Bake in moderate oven at 350° for 45 to 50 minutes.
