- 2 c. flour
- 1 c. white sugar
- 1 c. brown sugar
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1/2 c. shortening
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 1 c. buttermilk
- 1 egg, beaten
Directions

1Sift flour; measure and sift into bowl with sugars and salt. Cut in shortening with pastry blender until it is crumbly. Measure out 1 cup of this mixture and set aside for topping. Dissolve soda in buttermilk and add to beaten egg.

2Stir in remaining crumb mixture.

3Pour into a wax paper-lined 8-inch square pan.

4Sprinkle the 1 cup of crumb mixture over batter. Bake in moderate oven at 350° for 45 to 50 minutes.
