Cheese Straws

Ingredients

  • 1 lb. sharp cheese
  • 3 c. flour
  • 2 sticks margarine
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp. red pepper
  • 1 Tbsp. salt (scant)
  • 1/2 c. ice water

Directions

    Grate cheese, put in large bowl and let stand, covered, 8 hours or overnight.

    Melt margarine and pour over cheese.

    Work together by hand.

    Add sifted dry ingredients.

    Add enough of 1/2 cup water to make a rather stiff dough, mixing with hands.

    Press onto slightly greased cookie sheet with a cookie press, using the star shape.

    Cut into desired lengths.

    Bake in preheated 325° oven. Check at 10 minutes; bottom of straw will be very lightly browned when done.

    Ovens vary so cooking time will need to be adjusted accordingly.

    May take 15 to 20 minutes to bake, depending on oven used.
