- 1 pkg. active dry yeast
- 1/4 c. warm milk (105~ to 150~)
- 3/4 c. lukewarm milk
- 1/4 c. sugar
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 egg
- 1/4 c. shortening
- 3 1/2 to 3 3/4 c. all-purpose flour
Directions

1Dissolve yeast in warm milk.

2Stir in lukewarm milk, sugar, salt, egg, shortening and 2 cups flour.

3Mix in remaining flour to make it easy to handle.

4Turn dough lightly on floured surface. Knead until smooth and elastic.

5Place in greased bowl and let rise until doubled in size, 1 1/2 hours.

6Punch down and let rise again 30 minutes.

7Roll out to 3/8 inch thickness, cut with donut cutter and let rise on board until thick.

8Heat oil (3 to 4 inches) to 375°.

9Drop donuts into hot oil and turn donuts as they rise to the surface.

10Carefully remove.

11Glaze if desired.
