  • 2 c. sugar
  • 2 sticks butter
  • 2 3/4 c. flour (plain, not self-rising)
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 c. buttermilk

    Combine buttermilk and baking soda; set aside.

    (Baking soda will react with buttermilk and volume will increase.) Preheat oven to 325°.

    Cream together butter (at room temperature) and sugar. Alternately add eggs, one at a time, with flour and buttermilk mixture.

    Bake for approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes or until golden brown.
