Fried Green Tomatoes

  • 3 or 4 large firm green tomatoes
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 c. buttermilk
  • 1/2 c. corn meal
  • 1/4 c. flour
  • shortening

Directions

    Wash and slice tomatoes 1/8 to 1/4-inch thick.

    Beat egg and milk in bowl.

    In another bowl, combine corn meal and flour.

    Dip each slice individually in the milk and egg mixture and then in the flour and corn meal mixture.

    Have shortening about 1/2-inch deep in heavy skillet.

    When shortening is hot, place tomatoes in and fry (not too fast) until brown on both sides.

    Salt to taste.
