  • 1/4 c. shortening
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1 c. flour
  • 1/2 tsp. soda, mixed in the buttermilk
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 2/3 c. buttermilk
  • 1 pt. fresh or frozen berries
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1 c. juice from any fruit

Directions

    Mix the first 7 ingredients like a cake; beat it.

    Pour into a 9-inch square baking pan or glass baking dish.

    Spread over it the berries, 1 cup sugar (if unsweetened) and juice from the fruit. Bake at 350° for 45 minutes to 1 hour.
