  • 1 (4 oz.) pkg. German chocolate
  • 1/2 c. boiling water
  • 1 c. butter
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 4 egg whites, stiffly beaten
  • 2 c. sugar
  • 4 egg yolks
  • 2 1/4 c. flour
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 c. buttermilk

    Melt chocolate in boiling water; cool. Cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Add yolks, one at a time, beating well after each.

    Blend in vanilla and chocolate.

    Mix flour with soda and salt; add alternately with milk to chocolate mixture, beating after each addition until smooth.

    Fold in whites. Pour into 3 (9-inch) cake pans.
