Ingredients
- 3 pkg. (1/4 oz. each) dry yeast
- 1/2 c. warm water
- 5 c. self-rising flour
- 1/4 c. sugar
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 1 c. shortening
- 2 c. warm buttermilk
Directions

1Dissolve yeast in warm water; set aside.

2In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar and baking soda.

3Cut in shortening with pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse meal.

4Stir in yeast mixture and buttermilk.

5Mix well; turn out onto a lightly floured surface.

6Knead lightly a few times.

7Roll to 1/2-inch thickness.

8Cut with a 2 1/2-inch biscuit cutter.

9Place on lightly greased baking sheets.

10Cover and let rise in a warm place for about 45 minutes.

11Bake at 400° for 10 minutes.
