Ingredients
- 3 pkg. active dry yeast (1/4 oz. each)
- 1/2 c. warm water (110~ to 115~)
- 5 c. self-rising flour
- 1/4 c. sugar
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 1 c. shortening (Crisco)
- 2 c. warm buttermilk
Directions

1Dissolve yeast and sugar in warm water; set aside.

2In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and baking soda.

3Cut in shortening with pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse meal.

4Stir in yeast and sugar mixture and buttermilk.

5Mix well.

6Turn out on lightly floured surface.

7Knead lightly a few times.

8Roll to 1/2-inch thickness.

9Cut with biscuit cutter.

10Place on lightly greased baking sheet.

11Let rise in warm place about 45 minutes.

12(Can make dough night before and refrigerate.

13Next day, punch down, shape rolls; let rise and bake.)

14Bake at 400° for 10 minutes.

15Yields 4 dozen.
